The Counseling Core Faculty, located at the Phoenix, AZ campus, serves in the role of instructor and advisor to counseling students in the CACREP-accredited Clinical Mental Health program. This position requires professional identity as a mental health counselor, ongoing research specific to counseling and scholarly activities published and/or presented in counseling outlets. Full time faculty represent the Counseling Program as Core Faculty with a range of duties as assigned by the Program Chair and/or Dean of Faculty. This position is not a remote position, it is onsite at the Phoenix campus.


  • Teaches at least six (6), 3-semester hour counseling courses each year
  • Serves as Faculty Advisor to an assigned cohort of up to 25 counseling students
  • Provides clinical supervision and oversight for up to six (6) counseling students in the Counseling Skills Center as assigned
  • Assists with Supplemental Standard (student disposition) referrals and student remediation as needed
  • Assists with student evaluation and progress, and with counseling students in other programs when appropriate
  • Sits on campus appeals committee as needed and assigned 
  • Performs administrative duties including but not limited to assisting with clinical placement and tracking of student progress, reviewing student and faculty feedback on courses, and program curriculum
  • Attends College Campus Management Meetings, General Faculty Meetings, Content Area Meetings, and other meetings as required.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships by serving as a program resource for campus staff, faculty, and students, as well as a liaison to Central Administration Academic Affairs staff and the Dean of the College as assigned
  • Assists Central Administration Academic Affairs personnel, including the Deans, in the development and review of curriculum as well as the assessment of student learning
  • Represents the organization, as appropriate, in its relationship with the community by participating in targeted events, conferences, meetings, and workshops. This includes developing and maintaining active linkages with agencies and educational institutions to promote positive relationships and to facilitate articulation between the University’s programs and those of other institutions and/or agencies
  • Maintains a professional and technical knowledge of the curricula by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies. This includes maintaining a general knowledge of emerging issues and trends related to the respective campus Academic Affairs program(s)
  • Guides and acts as a resource for campus and learning center personnel. May be assigned to directly supervise staff as needed
  • Promotes and participates in research and scholarship at the campus level and collaborates with program faculty and students
  • Maintains an active research and scholarship agenda and provides quarterly progress reports to the Program Chair
  • Promotes research and scholarship through presentations at counseling-specific conferences
  • Promotes research and scholarship efforts through publication in peer-reviewed journals specific to professional counseling
  • Facilitates grant proposal writing to access University of Phoenix funding sources
  • Collaborates with campus administration, Program Chair, and Program Managers in the facilitation/hosting of annual campus research symposia
  • Attends annual ACA Conferences and/or regional and local professional counseling organization workshops and conferences
  • Assists, as needed, in preparing College of Humanities and Sciences program evaluations and assessments, accreditation reports, and self-studies
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Basic Qualifications:


  • Doctorate degree in Counselor Education required, or Doctorate degree in another field and at least 1 year full time teaching experience in a counseling program prior to July 1, 2013
  • Counselor identity imperative, professional organization membership required
  • State behavioral health license required; NCC and ACS required within 1 year of hire. Must be state qualified to provide clinical supervision to counseling students
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience teaching in a graduate Counselor Education program
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience providing clinical supervision
  • Must have at least 5 years of experience working in clinical/organizational counseling settings
  • Must have a record of research and scholarly activity


Additional Qualifications:


  • Experience in program evaluation and assessment preferred
  • Have a record of service and advocacy (e.g., program presentations, workshops, consultations, speeches, direct service to the counseling profession)
  • CACREP knowledge is strongly preferred
  • Demonstrate oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills to communicate with students, faculty and community
  • Ability to convey a professional image as well as effectively represent the University of Phoenix to students and the public
  • Ability to work with other faculty and administration in a team environment and be willing to coach faculty and/or students who may be new to the research processes
  • Demonstrate oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills to communicate with students, faculty and community
